The Gap is a residential suburb which is approximately eleven kilometers north-west of central Brisbane. The name was given due to its geographic location mainly a valley surrounded by hills on each four sides which includes Taylor Range, Mount Coot-tha, Mount Nebo and Mount Glorious. It is the gap between Taylor Range and Mt Coot-tha which was the only access to this area in the early days. Census showed a population of 15,949 last 2011.
The Gap is a leafy and hilly suburb of Brisbane. Initially occupied by the Turrbal people, the region was originally heavily forested. It was transitioned to become a farming industry, many of these farms were too small to be commercially successful, but still small portions of agriculture remained in the area until the 1980s. A big percentage of blockages of drainage are caused by tree roots. These roots can grow as much as 5 times the actual height of the trees. As these roots navigate its way underground in search of water, they end up going inside cracked pipes where an abundant supply of water is present. They form a big ball of clog which prevents water from flowing to its destination. With the approved residential developments, ensuing ground works create problems especially for pipes which are installed without proper care and attention. They create avenues for soil and sand to enter these water lines causing build ups that may lead to water congestion. Bad housekeeping can also lead to clogged drains. Putting down materials such as paper, food scraps, napkins and other sanitary products down drains and sinks can cause an immediate blockage and may cause water to shoot up the source.
