Located just 2.5 kms southeast of Brisbane’s central business district, East Brisbane is an inner suburb composed of many residential developments, many of which were constructed during its real estate property boom in the 1880s. These dwellings are typically inspired by the Queenslander style of architecture – structures that are mostly of timber construction and can range from one storey to two storeys high. To complement the locals’ lifestyles, several commercial establishments are also found within the area, including the Shafston Hotel.
East Brisbane is also home to quite a number of heritage-listed sites, such as St. Paul’s Anglican Church and Classic Cinema/Triumph Cinema. East Brisbane’s most popular historical landmark however, is Mowbray Park, a wide riverside park, covering 32,000 sq.m. of land.
As with many other suburbs in Brisbane, the region is dotted by lush greenery, resulting in many deeply rooted trees and plants. Consequently, many of these roots eventually find their way into the drainage system, causing severe damage and blockages and affecting the flow of water to and from the structures in the area. Because of the age of many of the homes in the area and other surrounding inner-city areas, collapsed pipes are also a common problem.
