An inner suburb located 3 kms north of the Brisbane central business district, half of the land in Herston is dedicated to residential developments. The other half of the suburb is comprised of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Victoria Park Golf Course and some green areas along Enoggera Creek in the north of the suburb. There are also some areas of light industry that can be found near the major thoroughfares of the region. While the hospital is one of the most well known landmarks of the suburb, many of Herston’s residents work or attend classes at the nearby educational institution in Kelvin Grove, the Queensland University of Technology.
Because of the rich landscape of Herston, many old trees here have developed mature root systems that grow and envelope around the drainage systems triggering pressure and resulting into cracks and damaged pipes. Likewise, because of the fairly dense population, and large number of rental homes in the area a lot of foreign objects are washed down drains that also cause blockages.
