Richlands is an outer suburb in Brisbane situated 16 kilometres south-west of the Brisbane Central Business District. It has a population of 2, 076. You can find the Ipswich Motorway and Centenary Motorway crossover in the area. It is also home to a Brisbane Premier League team, the Queensland Lions Football Club.
The Richlands State School was opened in 1934 and only started with one teaching staff. During that same year, a subdivision was established and was named, Richland Estate, which is most probably where the suburb’s name was derived. The area was then part of a larger suburb which is Darra until it was officially named a separate suburb in 1975.
During the suburb’s early years, there was a farming industry for dairy and poultry products as well as table grape growing and honey production. There are also a number of sport and recreational spaces in the area which includes the Brisbane West Tennis Centre, the Richlands Tenpin Bowl and the Darra Oxley Pony Club. There was once a drive-in theatre in Richlands in the 1970s but was closed in 2000 making it the last drive-in theatre in Brisbane.
Residential suburbs such as this with moderate traffic from recreational areas are likely to develop drainage problems that are mostly caused by grease, hair, sand and silt, and other foreign objects or debris. Having blocked drains can be very unpleasant, preventing wastewater from leaving your household or property.
