Stretton is a residential suburb which is 17 kilometres south of Brisbane CBD. It was named after George Stretto who was a settler and hotelier at Browns Plains in the 1880s. The region was officially recognized as a suburb of Brisbane in 1972. The suburb is surrounded by nearby areas of Calamvale, Drewvale, Sunnybank Hills, Karawatha and Kuraby. It was documented by the 2011 Australian Census that the population reached 4,067 and counting.
The area is a dormitory suburb with shopping and primary education facilities outside its boundaries. Stretton Recreation Reserve is also in the State Park, and is the starting point for several forest walking tracks. Alongside the areas’ busy streets and establishments grow many mature trees on private properties and parkways which eventually enter cracked pipes and block the flow of water. Once inside the pipe, the roots will continue to grow, and if not actioned upon, they will completely fill the pipe with hair-like root masses. Grease and other fatty substances are caught in drains and in time solidify and create deposits unless pumped out on regular intervals. With the suburb positioned in multiple elevations and downward slopes, an effective water flow system is essential to reach its destination.
